The History of Habitat Island

Habitat Island

The main reason that Habitat Island existed has to do with the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.  In 2007, there is a shoreline in False Creek that went all the way to the far edge of the Salt Building.  Underneath of it, there are salt pilings that are used to keep it from falling into the water. Thus, people who want to build public plaza and some other development need to bring tons and tons of gravel to fill up the creek. In fact, there is a federal regulation under DFO that says if one need to remove the shoreline for development , then they must make up for it someplace else. Therefore , the answer to the developers' problem is to create an island which we now call Habitat Island.
